Purpose

I just finished a 1-minute video promoting a site called gospelforth.com. They raise money to fund missionaries, Bibles, radio broadcasts, and more. If you go to www.gospelforth.com, you can click on a button that will take you to a page of advertisements. Each time a person clicks on the button, the advertisers contribute money to the cause. You can click up to once per day and the site even lets you sign up for an auto-reminder e-mail.

Creating videos like this is the reason Pilothouse Films exists and it was a fulfilling project personally. The video took a little over a week to put together, but that involved staying up past my bedtime almost every night of the week. The music is from an artist named Josh Woodward who graciously allows his music to be used in all kinds of ways completely free of charge. Thank you Mr. Woodward!

Shrinking Anacortes

Here is an experiment in making things look small:

Distribution

After I posted my last project to the Pilothouse Films Facebook page, I began to realize the power of distribution and communication that Facebook can provide. When I post a video, Facebook “fans” can immediately see it. If they like the video, they can easily “share” it with all of their friends, who can then share it with their own friends…and so on.

You see where I’m going with this. The number of people who have access to the video grows exponentially. That’s pretty amazing.

I’m looking forward to making use of that distribution for my own projects in the near future, but also as a selling point for web videos to business clients. If you get the right video combined with a communication technology like Facebook, you can easily reach thousands of people with virtually no additional costs.

Numbers

The number I’d really like to see is zero…but for now the number stands at 45,000,000 and counting.

I just finished a 30-second piece about the number of abortions in America. This issue has been on my heart for a long time and I plan to do more videos on this subject in the future. I’ve been so busy with weddings and other “business” projects that I haven’t had time to do what I really want to do with this creative outlet. It feels good to get this video out there:

Immersion

Just wrapped up a project with Common Ground International. I put together a promotional video for their high school immersion trips. CGI takes high school students to Costa Rica to experience the language and culture, serve the local community, and have a great time. I really like what they do because it isn’t just about taking students on a fun trip – it’s also about helping others. You can watch the promo video on their website, or on the Pilothouse Films Facebook page.

With the promo video off the plate, I’m editing a wedding filmed a couple of weeks ago in La Conner. We got some really nice looking footage that day (even with storm clouds and rain threatening) and I hope to have a highlight video up soon.

Success

By the grace of God (literally), the AIS soccer camp DVD came off without a hitch. Tuesday through Friday we shot video during the day (9 AM – 3 PM) then edited and worked on the DVD at night. Friday night was an all-night session for me and I finished at about 5:00 AM. Then we burned 100 copies of the DVD so all the campers could take one home after the awards ceremony on Saturday.

I did end up with less time than I would have liked to spend on the highlight video. I wanted a 10-minute video and I wanted it polished…but I just ran out of time. So it ended up being about 7 or so minutes and there are a lot of things I would improve if I could do it again. Having said that, everybody who commented seemed to like it so I guess it works. In fact, the camp director asked to include the highlight video on the AIS YouTube page. Mission accomplished.

Lessons learned:

1) Organization is key on a time-dependent project like this.
2) Anybody who has a part in the end product should have a clear vision of what the end product will look, sound, and feel like.
3) Prioritize content. If I could do it again, I’d work on the highlight video a little bit each night, rather than saving it until the end.
4) When designing things that are hard to change quickly (like DVD menu animations), it is important to have all the facts about the subject before you render out the clips.

This was a crazy project, but a ton of fun and very challenging. I’d love to do this one again next year.

Full Throttle

We are inside the red zone. About 12 hours to go on the Ambassadors In Sport soccer camp DVD project. I’ve still got to put together a 10 minute highlight video, 10 slide shows, add everything to the DVD project, link all the buttons, menus, transitions, and video clips, and then burn the master copy. Everything else is done.

I’ve got a 30 minute Compressor batch process running…that’s the only reason I’m writing a blog entry instead of working right now! The DVD needs to be finished by 6:00 AM so we can start burning the 100 copies for all the camp kids and coaches.

My main concern at this point is whether everything will fit on the DVD. I may need to drop one or two items, which might require a menu redesign which takes time. I really hope that won’t be necessary. We’ll find out soon enough!

Progress

The DVD is basically finished. There isn’t much more I can do until I get some footage of the campers and coaches in action next week. The only bit I still need to do is get music tracks onto each menu. Here are some pictures of the menus I designed:

There is a transition animation that zooms in to each sub-menu. Sub-menus also zoom back out to the main menu.

This menu will contain the highlight video for the week and also a 2-3 minute slide show of still photos for each of the teams that the campers are assigned to.

This menu will lead to short interviews with each coach.

This menu will lead to the talks given during the week and also to the skits performed.

In gearing up for next week’s camp I’ll need to schedule what the photographers are doing each day, what my intern and I will be shooting, and then charting out a work flow for getting slide shows and video into the DVD project. All video needs to be finished by Friday so we can burn DVDs for all the campers on Saturday morning. There won’t be time for any setbacks so hopefully everything works as intended.

In addition, I’ve got a rehearsal dinner Saturday night and a wedding to film on Sunday. This will be an insane week!

Rendering

I’m trying to learn/practice transitioning from a main menu into a sub menu on a DVD. But all the pieces of the animation are pretty complicated and they are taking hours to render out. Not the best way to “practice”. I think I need to create a really simple animation to practice the process. Last night’s render took 3 and a half hours. The current render is showing over an hour left. Wasted time…

Friday

So now begins the awkward stage of starting this kind of business. I’ve got a fully-functional web site, demo reel, sample video products, etc. But no customers. I’m filling the time with projects that have been on the back burner for a while.

I need to have a functional DVD menu ready to go for the AIS soccer camp in mid-July. It’s animated and ready to be built, but I wanted to try to add a few features to it (sub-menus with transition animations). I need that DVD project to be completely built so that when it comes time to film the camp, all I will need to do is drop the edited footage into the DVD project and burn it.

I will also need a “splash” animation to go on the front end of that DVD, with the PF logo involved somehow. I’ve got a working sample of what I want, but I might try to redo it in 3D with Blender.

Also on the back burner (way back) is the 4th installment of Gabe the Ace. It is a fun video I make each summer with my nephews and neice while we are on vacation at the family reunion in August. Usually I film and edit the video during the vacation. Last year I decided to just film it and then wait until I got back home to edit it…and it still isn’t finished. So I’ll try and wrap that up over the next week.

Enough blabber…
